Maths Cafe

Today we have thoroughly enjoyed having our grown ups come into school for our maths Cafe.  We heard the story of 'Spinderella' by Julia Donaldson and then worked hard to make a spider of our own.  We chose a number and then on each leg we found out different ways of showing that number or working with the number.  We taught our grown ups how to use Numicon, bead strings, number lines and hundred squares.  The grown ups also got to have a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Science storyteller

This week a lady came in from 'The Little Story Telling Company' to tell us a space story and we learnt a little about natural selection, inheritance and evolution and how different aliens might of survived.  We had the chance to dress up as aliens, become space explorers and dance to different music whilst learning about what might affect the aliens.  The aliens even got to dance to one direction, eat popcorn and some died with googly eyes that fell out after they had caught a cold!

Music and Movement

We were very lucky to have experienced a space themed music and movement session during which we took off in our rocket and landed on the moon.  The children explored walking like astronauts on the moon and then zoomed around in the atmosphere.  We pretended to be satellites and used a foil sheet to lift, shake and hide under.  We then got to use some finger lights to pretend to be stars before rolling large planets between the group.  What a lot of fun!

Inspirational maths and Peter Pan

This week at school we have been focusing on maths and the way we think about maths!  No one is born with a maths brain but we can all train our brains to understand maths and think through problems which will result in our brains growing stronger.  The children enjoyed watching some videos explaining about growth mindset and training the brains and from this they completed different activities to test out the theory.  We used 4 isosceles (not sausage Mrs Smith) triangles, followed some simple rules and made several different shapes from them.  We also looked at patterns of numbers represented using dots.  We circled several different combinations of numbers that we could see within them.  The children really persevered to do this and were excited with their results.

To round of the week we really enjoyed a performance of 'Peter Pan'  with the year 2 and 3 children also.  The actors, scenery, music and songs had the children captivated and buzzing when they came back to class.

Crash landing

Look what happened at school today.  There was a story on the news saying that something had been spotted flying over Mulbarton Primary School and that something had broken off and crash landed behind the beehive!!   The children were super excited to begin investigating this event and excitedly discovered that indeed something had landed in the grounds.  What can it be?  Where did it come from?  What is it made from?  Was there anyone inside? It could be a satellite?  These were just some of the questions and thoughts that the children were having about it.

Father Christmas Present

We had a great surprise on the last day of term when Father Christmas arrived and brought us some presents. It was a beautiful wooden small world with fairies and elves. He must have known we had been doing an Enchanted Woodland topic! We also got some super hero figures to use with the wooden base. (I wonder if he knows we might do that topic later in the year.)
